"Blog It Forward to Fight Hunger" with ShopRite

9:24 PM
Thanks to Jenn from Momma D and Da Boyz for connecting me to this great opportunity.

Walk over to your trash can now. Take a peek inside. Tell me, what is staring back at you? I am almost certain you or someone in your family has scraped the remains of breakfast, lunch, or dinner off the plate and into the trash.

So what's my point?

Well, not everyone has the luxury to waste food. Even if you are fortunate to live in abundance, there is no reason to be less mindful of those who go to bed hungry every single night.

I bet you had no clue about the startling statistics facing millions of people across the world. Take a look at this:

Facts About Hunger in America

  • More than 36 million Americans (11 percent of U.S. households) suffer from food insecurity
    • Food insecurity is when you are unsure when or what your next meal will be
  • Statewide food insecurity rates in the ShopRite area are:
    • New Jersey – 7.7%
    • Delaware – 7.8%
    • Maryland – 9.5% (my home state)
    • Connecticut – 8.6%
    • Pennsylvania – 10%
    • New York – 9.8%
  • More than 12 million children are growing up hungry
  • Nearly 2 million seniors suffer from food insecurity
  • During 2007, nearly 18 million children received free or reduced lunch
  • There are many complications of hunger, especially for children, including:
    • Weakened immune systems
    • Cognitive and behavioral development problems; can cause irritability, fatigue and difficulty concentrating in younger children. Also proven to cause depression in some teenagers
    • Slow or unusual development in areas such as speaking, behavior and movement
  • A $1 donation can purchase 10 pounds of food from a food bank

*Facts are as reported by Feeding America

I am almost ashamed to say, "I'm hungry" anymore. Unlike these millions of Americans, I do know where my next meal is going to come from. The question is, what can I do, we do, to make this problem become a thing of the past?

ShopRite has found a solution (some of the following information has been provided).

In 1999, ShopRite conceived and began its ShopRite Partners In Caring program, a year-round, community based hunger fighting initiative. With the help of more than 50 manufacturers, the program is committed to helping to feed and meet the nutritional needs of families and the elderly who may otherwise go without. These generous companies are a major reason why ShopRite Partners In Caring has been such a success.

Today, the ShopRite Partners In Caring program supports 23 regional food banks and more than 1,400 charitable agencies with food or meal components. With a $2 million annual donation, more than $20 million has been donated since 1999 in the fight against hunger.

If you want to be a part of the solution, visit your local ShopRite and look for products from companies that have joined in the fight to end hunger. The shelf tag will look like the photo to the left.

Every time a customer purchases products with the ShopRite Partners In Caring shelf tag, they support the brands that support the fight against hunger. At ShopRite, customers are not just filling a grocery bag; they are helping to fill empty bowls for thousands of hungry families in your community.

Each of the 217 ShopRite stores in the six states that ShopRite serves (New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Maryland) selects qualified local organizations to benefit from the program. These local food charities use their designated funds to acquire supplies at a food bank.

Box of Cereal donated to a food bank

On top of everything mentioned, General Mills and ShopRite will donate one box of cereal to a food bank in ShopRite’s trading area for the first 30 people who comment on your post.

Now it's easier than ever to help fight hunger.

Please leave a comment about (pick one):
  • what you can do to stop wasting food
  • how you can help fight hunger
  • why charity is important to you
  • how you feel about ShopRite's efforts
  • ways you serve your community
  • or anything relevant to this topic

*I, along with nearly 100 bloggers, will have an image become part of a photo mosaic on a General Mills Honey Nut Cheerios box that will be available for sale exclusively at ShopRite stores in January, 2010.

  8. My mother used to gripe about us wasting food...and now I'm the griper. I can't stand to throw food away.

This is a great cause, I hope you get your full 30 comments!

  9. I, myself, have been there with 3 children (before I married my husband). There were times I had to go to organizations to ask for help and food. Now, I volunteer at local food distribution banks and serve those less fortunate food. It is a wonderful and exhilarating experience to be able to pay it forward. Thank you to all the companies that are a part of this and thank YOU for doing such a wonderful thing for the community.

  10. I hate wasting food, we've been to the point where we barely had anything in our kitchen, and had to rely on the help of others. Now, we only buy what we absolutely need and what we will eat.

I think this is a wonderful thing you're doing!

  11. It's wonderful to see companies like ShopRite take a stand and try to help fight hunger in America. I will watch for those labels before making my purchases.

  12. This is a great thing, always glad to support. We frequently bring food to the local organization and also donate everything else that can be of help to those who may need it more than we do.

  15. Great program. To whom much is given, much is expected. It's so easy to pick up a few extra cans and drop them off at the food bank. Most of us, myself included, rarely think to do it unless the job or school is having a food drive. I'm glad this program exists to fill the gap.

  18. For us wasting food use to be a big problem because I would find myself cooking portions too large. One way we help combat this now is by measuring portions before we cook to make sure none goes to waste.

  19. It's great to see my friends participating in this awesome campaign! We all need to take a few minutes now and then to do a little something for those less fortunate than we are!

  20. To stop wasting food, I would put smaller portions on the plate for myself and my children. We can always get more if we're still hungry, but if we get full before the food is gone, its a total waste. And if you're like me, you hate to eat behind your kids, so... well you know what happens next.

  21. It is God's plan for us to be stewards of what He has so graciously given us, so to see that General Mills & Food Rite are giving back is important. It's important for consumers to see that the big businesses that we make profitable are not all about their profit margin.

    Way to Go!

  23. One of my favorite charities is Feed America. I've donated to them before and believe in what they are doing which is helping to end hunger in America. To think that people in the US go hungry every day is very sad.

  24. Giving to charities is very important to me. In my case giving back is exactly that, giving back. I have been in the shoes of those in need. Now I am in a position to give back to others in need. You never know when you will need the help at some point in your own life.

  25. We've all been on the other hand of someone generous, someone who has opened their heart and gave back to us..so it's important to keep that going. Millions are hungry each day and we can feed them..let's start and continue.

  26. I love that there are organizations out there who care. If we all could be more cautious about what we put on our plate we could all save a ton of food that would be throw away.

  27. glad to be one of the 30 - I don't think we have ShopRite in this area. Hope this helps!

we can help the average families get cash back at over 600 stores with a VIP shopping membership @ shop YTB http://www.CheckItOutTravel.info - here is an idea that I'm going to start in my community - I am going to donate my cash back reward checks to our local food bank! How many others want to join me?

  28. It makes me so sad to think of how many families go hungry in the US. We are very active in sending food to our local food bank during all the food drives. I feel its especially important to do it now more than ever because the economy is down.

  30. Tooth Fairy does not waste food, she is very resourceful & can whip up a meal with next to nothing! She's been around a long time & heard the war stories of hungry folks looking forward to eating raw potato peels! Great to see tweeting used towards good causes! To be healthy a body needs to be fed properly!
