No, my eyes aren't closed. Yes, I have a moustache. Judge me later.
Don't be fooled. This picture is a few years old.
There was a time when my little man actually gave me kisses. Now, I'd be lucky to sneak one on his cheek or forehead. I know I should not take this personal, but I do. I am his mother. It is important that he knows I love him.
Who would have thought that at the age of 8 I would face rejection from my own child? I am bracing myself for adolescence when, instead of attempting to kiss my son, he may very well tell me to, "Kiss This" and speed off with my car. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but each day I feel like I'm losing him to a process called 'growing-up'. And that, I cannot get use to.
How Are Things Better Than Ever?
- Well, he does love his mother. I just have to face the fact that he is getting older, and some things just aren't cool when you're his age.
- I have noticed that he appreciates me. Even if it is a simple "thank you" after we go for an ice cream run, it makes my heart flutter.
- He is a great, young man. Seeing him grow older and make decisions is vindication that he is surrounded by a wonderful family.
I am discovering that spending time on the computer, documenting our children with each step they take, and updating our lives one tweet at a time are all temporary keepsakes. It's what goes on outside the virtual world that is better than ever.
I encourage everyone, including myself, to step away from the light (your computer screen), and spend real-time with your children. Set aside a special day or time to be with the ones you love.
